Dagur 2, Ísland

We woke up early this morning to a glorious clear sky, the sun was shining through the trees and lighting up all the different hills around us. It was the best way to wake up. Excited to get under way, we hit the road around 6:30am.

We drove through all these valleys as the sun continued to rise. I wish the pictures did it true justice; the massive expanse of land, mountains and water are just beautiful. We officially fell in love with Iceland this morning. Zaq and I just drove hours in comfortable silence taking in all the beauty of this country.

Our goal was to go explore the beautiful different colored hills of Landmannalaugar, but we soon discovered the roads that would lead us to the trail head were less than desirable to take our rental on, they even had a sign warning rental cars not to continue, ha ha ha. We heeded this advice. Bummer, but not deterred to continued on to see waterfalls that pour out of lava fields,  called Hraunfossar, it was the clearest water and such a massive rush of water. Very cool!

We kept driving along the west coast of Iceland and stopped in Eiríksstaðir. An authentic Viking town and is also the birthplace of Leif the Lucky who is said to have discovered North America. It was very cool to see remnants of old Viking buildings.

Next we drove all the way up north, it was a long drive, but so worth it to see Hvitserkur, a monster shape rock in black sand. He was one of the main sights that drew me to Iceland, so amazing to check that off my bucket list!

We had a long drive to make before camp, so we decided to eat dinner before. On the menu was ham & cheese quesadillas, sprinkled with kale, made by yours truly. It was delicious and the view was spectacular.  We had to use our stove as much out of the wind as possible, hence me cooking on the ground.

We were driving during golden hour, when the sun is setting and it’s light casts so many beautiful shades across the sky and land. We noticed we would be passing close to the Akranes Lighthouse, a perfect way to end the day. We watched the sunset from there and it was gorgeous.

Then we drove all the way down to the south coast to camp in order to put us closer to our next days journey. We found the perfect secluded camp spot and the skies were so clear, we star gazed, able to see the Milky Way and even small amounts of Northern Lights! None of our cameras were good enough to capture either, but man, it was unreal.

Ready for more tomorrow, but first some shut eye!
