Salona & Split

Hi All!

Woke up early today to get a workout in at CrossFit Box V – it was the perfect amount of strength, gymnastics and cardio.

5 x 2 Front Squat @ 85%

Then 10 minute AMRAP

200 m Run, 8 Burpees, 5 Chest to Bar, 5 Toe to Bar.

(Zaq on his last set of Front Squat)

After we finished we went back to our Airbnb and got cleaned up, working out in this heat really gets you drenched, ew, I know!

Then we decided to go check out the Ancient Ruins of Salona, where there is an amphitheater that dates back to the late half of the 2nd Century A.D. – wow!

At one point in time, the Amphitheater was three stories tall and could seat 17,000. This is where gladiator battles were held. We also learned of this tunnel, where they would place the dead after a battle, before another began. It was boarded off so we couldn’t explore further.

We did take a look all around and it was apparent how much history was there.

We even did a little acro. 🙂

We started getting hungry and made our way back toward the Airbnb where we hopped into a grocery store and picked up some sandwich fixings.

Made the sandwiches and devoured them! You know how Yelp has a filter where you can search for how many dollar signs a meal will generally cost you? Well Zaq and I dubbed our meals as “one dollar signing it.” We two dollar sign when we feel fancy – ha ha! But honestly, if you travel a lot, it becomes really handy to prep most your own food and only eat out once a day. It leaves more funds available for experiences and excursions!

For the rest of the day we planned to lay out on a local beach in Split, but the weather turned windy and there was an orange warning for thunderstorms, so we decided to just wander around Split and let our feet be the adventure! Even with the wind and cloud coverage it was still so hot.

We found ourselves back in Old Town, but it was less crowded and we were able to fully explore the Diocletian’s Palace. We walked the whole area, turning down any side street that caught our eye.

We turned down a pretty narrow alley and found the tinniest Croatian Kitty. He was very playful!

We kept moving along and found ourselves on the fringe of the Marjan Forest Park. We started up this hill and once we got to the top, you could see all of Split and it’s harbor! There was also a little patio where you could order drinks and enjoy the view, which we took advantage of! I mean we one dollar signed lunch, right?

We decided to venture a little way into the Marjan, we actually plan to make a half day of exploring it soon, because it’s so massive, but we also couldn’t resist checking it out!

Working up an appetite for dinner, we decided to start walking back to the Airbnb to cook. Along the way back we explored the pier area and our local beach Bacvice.

The Bacvice Beach, despite the crazy weather, still had a bunch of people splashing around in the water. We sat and enjoyed the crazy white caps and clouds moving in for a bit. The beach looked very cool and we plan to come back!

We ended the day with a pretty delicious one dollar sign meal, and started brainstorming what we would do tomorrow since the thunderstorms and clouds still could be a factor.

For anyone else interested in traveling to Croatia, here are some quick tips Zaq and I have picked up:

Tip 1: A majority of your transactions will be done in local currency, Kunas, but in order to get smaller bills take your Kunas out at a bank ATM and have them break the larger bills.

Tip 2: A supermarket is more like a quick stop, if you want a variety in groceries look for a maximarket, Tommy was a favorite of ours.

Tip 3: If you drive; drive with purpose, Croatian’s are pretty aggressive drivers and won’t hesitate to honk or move past you. It’s ok, just breathe and join the flow! Also when lights are about to turn green, the red AND yellow light up, when this happens, GO! Croatians don’t like waiting, ha ha!

Tip 4: Don’t pay for parking. You can generally find it and in Croatia you can park on the sidewalks, so don’t be afraid to hop a curb!

Hope that helps some of you looking to visit! Until tomorrow, goodnight!
